The Lowdown | Orange and Pink Together in Your Garden

If you are struggling with achieving orange and pink together in your garden, I'm here to help.

Getting pink into your garden?  No problem.  I could write for days about the number of plants you could use that have pink flowers.  Am I right?

Sources to these images can be found on my Think Pink Pinterest Board.

Let's forget about the plants just for a minute.

I don't know if you have noticed, but there is an abundance of orange modern garden furniture, garden planters and other garden accessories available. Why is that?  I would like to think that it is because orange compliments so many other colors without muting them.  It is also because it can be difficult to find plants with long blooming orange flowers in most climates aside from the desert.  Most of the orange modern garden furniture, garden planters and garden accessories are bold.  That's OK!  That hue will go perfectly with almost any shade of pink. The more shades of pink flowers the better, in my opinion.

Start there.  Purchase, paint or wasi tape something orange. Orange chairs, outdoor pillows, cushions, planters, light fixtures, garden planters, poof, outdoor rug, other garden accessories...anything that inspires you and that fits your taste.

You can find inspiration for your orange garden accessories from my D.I.Y. Pinterest board.

Continuing orange throughout the rest of your garden can be challenging, but achievable!  Where you think about adding purple, substitute something with an orange flower: azaleas, geum, lilies, tulips, ranunculus, pansies, ice plant, dahlias, poppies, yucca, lewesia, lantana, agastache, columbine, or flowering quince. Yes, all of these can add orange to your garden!  Depending on the zone you live in and the space you have to plant.

Incorporating peach colors will help tie in the two colors together as well.

Remember the time of year when planting.  Make sure you have some orange and pink flowers blooming at the same time.

Having a grey, grey/brown or white background is always best when adding orange and pink to your garden.  The brick or red/brown tones can clash with the orange and pink, leaving you with an awkward color palette.

Loree Bohl of Danger Garden in Portland, Oregon says she struggles with combining orange and pink in her garden.  She has asked me to offer her suggestions on how to add these colors to her muted Oregon light using softer tones.  She has the most beautiful garden already, but I thought it would be fun to use her garden as an example of how to incorporate these colors into a traditional styled home that does not receive the dry, desert climate that so many landscapes with orange and pink offer.

Stay tuned.  If you have a similar situation, let me know!  I'd love to help you bring orange and pink into your garden!

  1. The first thing that hit me were all the plants in that photo which are gone now! (stupid winter). I guess I'll just have to put your thoughts and suggestions to work in filling in. Your statement "Where you think about adding purple, substitute something with an orange flower" is a good one...I'll try!

    2. It's "just" the tall cordylines on the left (they'll come back from the roots, but take a year+ to get that height again) and the succulent in the front on the right ( Mangave 'Macho Mocha').
